The Last Kids on Earth, a death-defying monster apocalypse, was written by Max Brallier and illustrated by Douglas Holgate.
The story starts off on the last day of school; it is beginning of the apocalypse. A group of kids that go to Parker Middle School stick together to protect each other from the monsters. Jack Sullivan is the leader. At the beginning of the story, the team of kids knew each other very little but throughout the book they bonded while they defeated ferocious monsters like Blarg, zombies, dozers, etc. with powerful teamwork.
The book was unpredictable, so it was hard to put down. I always wanted to know what was going to happen next. I had never read a book that was filled with so much suspense. I planned to spend four days reading it, but I finished it in one day!
The author’s message was to never give up and keep on trying. The kids had to keep trying to defeat Blarg many times. They lost many times too, but they never gave up. In the end, they had triumphed. At the very end of the book, Jake thinks to himself, “[We’ve got] A treehouse to rearm. A home to defend. And you know what? It feels great.”
I highly recommend this book for its fast pace and thrills.
