Art Today, Sand Tomorrow!

California resident Jim Denevan, is an amazing artist whose work is admired by all, but owned by none - that's because all of Jim's art is created on an unusual canvas - the soft sand. He sometimes spends days working on a piece, only to see it washed away by the sea or a storm and that, is just the way he likes it.

11-Year-Old Florida Boy's Redesigned Sandbag Could Help Millions During Natural Disasters

Having lived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida all his life, 11-year-old Peyton Robertson is well aware of the havoc caused by hurricanes. At the tender age of 4 he suffered through Hurricane Wilma, one of the most intense tropical cyclones from the Atlantic and then just last year experienced Hurricane Sandy, the deadliest, most destructive storm of the 2012 season and the second most costliest of all US storms.

Forming Cliques Is Not Just A Human Trait - Baboons Do It Too!

The human tendency to gravitate towards people that are similar to them starts early. In school-age children, the behavior called homophily, or 'love of the same' often has to do with how others dress or act. Adults tend to form groups based on social stature, professions or personalities. Turns out that forming cliques and shutting out those that are "different" is not just a human trait. South Africa's Chacma or Cape baboons display similar tendencies as well!

Hi Guys! I was poking around Dogo and found some articles I thought you would enjoy. I'm going to write about Dogo for the Master Naturalist newsletter - I think others would like this site, don't you? The baboon article is just food for thought. The sandbag article is for you because you can relate as inventors - it's inspiring. The sand article is for you in hopes that you'll try this sand art if you are at a beach. Be sure to watch his video. I love the book reviews from Julia - hope others will join in the fun. I've finished two books so far. One book I tried to read two times before and could never get past the first chapter - so boring! But, I forced myself this time and was glad I did. It took off and I didn't put it down for a couple of days. The other book was on the Japenese art of tidying. Yeah, I've got a lot of tidying to do! So much fun to read. (Note: balance between fiction/ non-fiction!) Anyway, you guys take care. Wear sunscreen - you'll be glad you did when your my age! Love, Mrs. Runyon

Researchers Discover Huge Underground Water Reserves In Africa

While fresh water reserves are declining in many parts of the world, nowhere is the situation as dire as the continent of Africa where, over 300 million people have no access to safe drinking water and only 5% of the arable land is being irrigated.

Crimson Waters Cause Several Sydney Beaches To Close

Surfers visiting Sydney's world famous Bondi Beach on Tuesday November 26th, were in for a little shock - The normally crystal clear blue ocean waters had turned a crimson red! However, before you get all concerned, it was not the result of a brutal shark attack, nor oily tomato sauce as was the original rumor! Instead the culprit was an over abundance of algae called noctiluca scintillans or sea sparkle.

On Wednesday, November 12th, an unmanned spacecraft made history by landing perfectly on its target - a speeding comet that lies at a distance of 310 million miles from earth. According to the European Space Agency (ESA), the brainchild behind this audacious project, the Rosetta space probe that housed the 220-pound washing machine-sized Philae lander, released its passenger to its destination perfectly - not an easy feat given that the Comet 67P was hurtling through space at a speed of 41,000 mph.

The phenomenon whereby large boulders, some weighing as much as 500 lbs, move several hundred yards in a straight line or zigzag patterns, has confounded experts for years.

Rising sea levels are a growing worry for many coastal cities around the world. While all are expected to be impacted, some like Indonesia's capital Jakarta, are more vulnerable. Located in the northwest coast of the Java Sea, Southeast Asia's most populous city lies on a low flat basin at the mouth of the Ciliwung River on the Jakarta Bay. Though its average elevation is 8-meters (26 feet), 40% of the city lies below sea level and is sinking by as much as six inches, annually. Experts speculate that if this pace continues, much of northern Jakarta will be underwater by 2030.

This is big news. Really big news.' Now here is another article about the mission! Rosetta and Philae work together as "partners" to complete this mission. This is a big achievement because it was the very first time a space probe landed on a comet in world history. I take my hat off to you, ESA!

Malala worked hard, fighting for girl education. Her bravery and courage supported the argument of girl learning. Kailash Satyarthi gave up his job just for child labor. His determination cancelled out the horrible issue. Child labor wouldn't have made a difference without Kailash. Both people strived to hold human dignity. They conquered important problems.
