The main thing holding back Diary of a Wimpy Kid is its low-budget, mediocre quality. That being said, it's harmless entertainment and provides pure and healthy takeaways for its target demographic. It's hard to go wrong with the repeatedly proven source material of this beloved series, but this CG animated version lacks some of the charm of the books and the previous live-action films. Diary of a Wimpy Kid" has its charms, staying faithful to the source material even if the minuscule (and pre-school friendly) 56-minute runtime holds it back from branching out beyond a series of vignettes that feel scatterbrained. Doesn't attempt to get its arms around the source material, but it's pleasingly colorful and nicely animated, and brevity is perhaps the only way to digest Kinney's bizarrely hostile understanding of childhood neuroses.
