Jamal Wallace is a bright student but none of his friends know that; They think he's just there dumb basketball buddy that they grew up with. But Jamal is smart he just hides it. So when his friends dare him to go inside the neighborhood watchers home he doesn't hesitate. All he had to do is break in steal something and break out. Sounds simple enough until he gets caught. So he rushes out the door realizing he forgot his backpack in all the commotion and in his backpack is his journal the same one with all his writing in it. He has to go back. When he does he sees his backpack in the mans window so he retrieves it. Once he sees his journal he realizes that all of his writings have been critiqued so he goes to the neighborhood watcher and asks him why and how he knew this much just to find out that he is none other than William Forrester the author of Avalon Landing. William agrees to help Jamal with improving his writing as long as he doesn't ask any personal questions or give away his whereabouts. On many of their crazy adventures these two polar opposites realize that through love of writing they have much more in common then they could ever write down.
